Just as each Sunday is a victory celebration of our Lord’s Resurrection (Pascha), very early on, while the Apostles were yet alive, the Church set apart Wednesdays and Fridays as special days of observance within the Christian week. These days were chosen due to their unique link with the Passion and the redemptive suffering of Christ. Therefore, we fast on Fridays to acknowledge the day of Jesus’ Crucifixion and on Wednesday to recall His betrayal at the hand of Judas, for thirty pieces of silver.
