An “orb” is a traditional, long-standing symbol of power and/or authority. In some icons Christ is depicted holding one or resting His hand upon one to show His authority as Creator. Throughout history, kingdoms fabricated orbs made of precious metals and encrusted them with jewels as a symbol of their ruling family’s realm. The Crown Jewels of England are made up of a crown, scepter, ceremonial jewelry, and just such an orb.
The Archangel Michael is most often shown holding a sword (sometimes a flaming sword), but occasionally is depicted holding an orb to signify that his is the “leader of the Bodiless Hosts.”
