If you trap flies in a glass jar with a lid, they will fly around seeking a way out. Eventually, however, they will become so accustomed to the confinement of the jar, that if you were to remove the lid, they would continue to fly around the interior, never venturing upwards to escape. They become “trapped” by their learned boundaries. Many of us are like those trapped flies: remaining in our “comfort zones,” governed by our weaknesses, never expanding our efforts to excel, educate, or grow our faith. We need to follow the example of the two blind men in today’s gospel lesson who pushed their boundaries and limitations to get to Christ. They not only left the familiarity of their surroundings but followed Jesus into the uncharted territory of a strange home to seek His help, no small feat for a blind person! Perhaps if we ventured forth and pushed the preconceived boundaries and limitations of our own faith, we, too, would find the spiritual wealth and well-being needed for our own healing, growth, and salvation.
