In the southwestern part of the United States, you can travel for miles through vast, harsh, desert areas where nothing but parched, arid earth stretches to the horizon in all directions. The only noticeable vegetation being cactus and scrub brush. Then, suddenly, you can happen upon areas which are green and fertile, with fruit trees of all kinds and vegetables growing in abundance. What makes the difference? A miracle of technology known as irrigation. Life-giving water pumped into the desert transforms the land into a lush verdant capable of yielding a bounty of crops.
In essence, one might liken “irrigation” to the core of the Church’s mission because the Church exists to bring Living Water to a thirsting people and thirsting people to Christ, transforming the world by producing Light, Love, Truth, Peace, Understanding and Compassion even to the most dire, harshest regions devoid of Jesus’ Word and teachings. Therefore, we each must strive to provide the Gospel to thirsting people by our word, example, and service, so that the spiritual fruit needed for salvation will blossom and flourish for all.
