Prayer is the seed of gentleness and the absence of anger.

If you want to pray properly, do not let yourself be upset or you will run in vain.

If Moses, who was a god to Pharaoh, was shut out from the Land of Promise because of one word, how much more will not the evil speech of our tongue, by which we offend and hurt both God and man, shut us out from heaven?

A single word made the thief pure and holy, despite all his previous crimes, and brought him into paradise (cf. Luke 23:42-43). A single ill-advised word prevented Moses from entering the promised land (cf. Num. 20:12). We should not suppose, then, that garrulity is only a minor disease. When anyone is disturbed or saddened under the pretext of a good and soul-profiting matter, and is angered against his neighbor, it is evident that this is not according to God: for everything that is of God is peaceful and useful and leads a man to humility and to judging himself.

Through anger wisdom is lost, so that we no longer know what we are to do, or in what manner we should do it.

Truly, arrogance knows that it is guilty; therefore it places anger at the gate, to act as its sentry.

Long-suffering and readiness to forgive curb anger; love and compassion wither it.

Apt silence bridles anger.

A brother asked Abba Isidore the priest, 'Why are the demons so frightened of you?' The old man said to him, 'Because, ever since the day I began practicing ascesis, I have striven to prevent anger from reaching my lips.'
