Solitude offers us an excellent opportunity for calming our passions and giving our reason time to remove them thoroughly from our soul. Paissy the Great, having lost his temper, begged the Lord to deliver him from irritability. The Lord appeared to him and said, ‘Paissy, if thou dost not wish to get angry, desire nothing, neither criticize nor hate any man, and thou wilt have no anger.’

If, wishing to correct another, you are moved to anger, you gratify your own passion. Do not lose yourself in order to save another.

Holy Scripture is presented to the mind’s eye like a mirror in which the appearance of our inner being can be seen.

The Scriptures were not given merely that we might have them in books, but that we might engrave them on our hearts.

Apt silence bridles anger.
