Self-knowledge is a true idea of one's spiritual growth, and an unbroken remembrance of one's slightest sins.

Every man who has committed sin, has stopped up the senses of his soul with the mud of pleasure.

It is vain that some unenlightened people seek the greatest evil for man somewhere else, rather than in sin. Some consider disease to be the greatest evil, others - poverty, and others - death. Abba Theon ate vegetables, but only those that did not need to be cooked. Certainly one could see the tracks of antelopes and wild asses and gazelles and other animals near his hermitage. These creatures always gave him pleasure.

'And forgive us our debts as we also forgive our debtors.' For we have many sins.
