The grace of the Spirit cannot remain with us without the practice of the commandments, but the practice of the commandments is of no help or advantage to us without the grace of God.

Our enemies (demons) fell because of their pride, and call us to follow them, and bring us feelings of praise. And if your soul accepts that praise, then grace will depart, until the soul becomes humble again. And so all your life you must learn the humility of Christ.

The Scriptures were not given merely that we might have them in books, but that we might engrave them on our hearts.

If you have no works, do not speak on virtues. Afflictions suffered for the Lord's sake are more precious to Him than every vow and sacrifice; and the odor of their sweet surpasses every fragrance.

Almsgiving heals the soul's incensive power; fasting withers sensual desire; prayer purifies the intellect and prepares it for contemplation of created beings. For the Lord has given us commandments which correspond to the powers of the soul.

Reading the Scriptures is a great means of security against sinning.

One should nourish the soul with the word of God: for the word of God, as St. Gregory the Theologian says, is angelic bread, by which are nourished souls who hunger for God. From this there occurs an enlightenment in the mind, which is in the mind, which is changed by a Divine change.

Holy Scripture is presented to the mind’s eye like a mirror in which the appearance of our inner being can be seen.

Struggle until death to fulfill the commandments: purified through them, you will enter into life.
