The man who has come to loathe sin has mounted the first rung of the heavenly ladder.

Just as desire and rage multiply our sins, so self-control and humility erase them.

Do not disregard your conscience, which always counsels you of the best. It puts before you divine and angelic advice; it frees you from the hidden stains of your heart, and will make you the gift of free speech with God at the time of your departure.

Strive to walk worthily of the vocation to which you were called.

All sin is due to sensual pleasure, all forgiveness to hardship and distress.

Every man who has committed sin, has stopped up the senses of his soul with the mud of pleasure.

When God, using our conscience, calls us to righteousness and yet our self-will opposes Him, He respects our freedom and lets our own will be done; but then, alas, our minds grow dull, our will slack, and we commit iniquities without number. A treasure that is known is quickly spent: and even so any virtue that is commented on and made a public show of is destroyed. Even as wax is melted before the face of fire, so is the soul enfeebled by praise, and loses the toughness of its virtue.

Whoever reproaches us gives us a gift, but whoever praises us, steals from us.

He who does not consciously choose to distance himself from a cause for sin, will be drawn to sin, even against his will.

Believe me, brethren, the more we are now in earnest to keep ourselves free from sin, the more confident shall we then be in His Presence.

It is a great work to shake from the soul the praise of men, but to reject the praise of demons is greater.

People of high spirit bear offence nobly and gladly, but only the holy and righteous can pass through praise without harm.

Being delivered from bodily sins is not enough, we must also cleanse the inner energy which dwells in our souls.

Do not stir up a memory that will cover your prayer with mud, do not root around in the soil of your old sins.

If you feel no pang in committing minor offences you will through them fall into major transgressions.
