Just as our Lord is solicitous about our salvation, so too the murderer of men, the devil, strives to lead a man into despair... That is why we are without true enlightenment from the Lord, which He sends into the hearts of men who hunger and thirst wholeheartedly for God’s righteousness or holiness.

As a cloud veils the light of the moon, so the vapors of the belly banish the wisdom of God from the soul.

Reading the scriptures is a great safeguard against sin.

One should not ponder divine matters on a full stomach, say the ascetics. For the well-fed, even the most superficial secrets of the Trinity lie hidden.

Whoever is experienced in the spiritual interpretation of Scripture knows that the simplest passage is of a significance equal to that of the most abstruse passage, and that both are directed to the salvation of man.

Reading the Scriptures is a great means of security against sinning.
