Just as desire and rage multiply our sins, so self-control and humility erase them.

When you intend to do something and see that your thought is perturbed, and if after invoking God's Name it remains perturbed even by a hair's breadth, know from this that the action you mean to commit is from the evil one and refrain from commiting it. For nothing done with perturbation is pleasing to God.

God seeks nothing else from us men except that we do not sin; this alone. But this is not a work of law; it is rather a careful guarding of the image and dignity from above. In these things, affirmed in our nature and bearing the radiant garment of the Spirit, we shall abide in God and He in us. Greater therefore is the rejoicing of heaven over the sinner converted than upon the soul that remained just. Ignorance of the scriptures is a precipice and a deep abyss.

There is a sin which is always 'unto death' [1 Jn 5:16]; the sin which we have not repented. Even a saint's prayers will not be heard for the unrepented sin. The person who repents correctly does not imagine that his sins are cancelled through his own effort; but knows that through this effort he makes peace with God.

The Scriptures were not given merely that we might have them in books, but that we might engrave them on our hearts.

He who does not consciously choose to distance himself from a cause for sin, will be drawn to sin, even against his will.

Reading the Scriptures is a great means of security against sinning.

Just as our Lord is solicitous about our salvation, so too the murderer of men, the devil, strives to lead a man into despair... Judas the betrayer was fainthearted and unskilled in battle, and so the enemy, seeing his despair, attacked him and forced him to hang himself; but Peter, a firm rock, when he fell into great sin, like one skilled in battle did not despair nor lose heart, but shed bitter tears from a burning heart, and the enemy, seeing these tears, his eyes scorched as by fire, fled far from him wailing in pain.

Do not hate the sinner. Become a proclaimer of God's grace, seeing that God provides for you even though you are unworthy.
