Spiritual Blindness and the Issues that Divide Us

One day, two men whom Jesus had healed of blindness happened to meet. They were so excited to talk because they each shared this unique experience. The men related their wonder of going from blindness to sight, darkness to light; being able to see the color of flowers, the beauty of creation, glorious sunrises, and sunsets; not to mention the faces of their families and loved ones – including the face of Jesus.

They both laughed and cried re-telling their joy at receiving sight when one of them unexpectedly said to the other, “Did you ever think that when Jesus spit on the ground, made clay, and put it on your eyes you would really be able to see?”

The other man replied in stunned fashion, “That never happened to me. Jesus never made mud with His spit. He simply said, ‘Receive your sight,’ and I could see.”

The first man said, “Wait a minute, are you telling me that Jesus healed you without using mud?”

The second man said, “Yes.”

The first man then said, “Well, did He as least tell you to go wash in the Pool of Siloam?”

“No,” replied the second man. “He just spoke it, and the miracle occurred.”

The first man began to get upset that other did not receive healing in the same fashion. So, he said to the other, “If Jesus didn’t spit on the ground, make clay, anoint your eyes, and tell you to go and wash in the Pool of Siloam, then you must still be blind!”

The second man then also became heated and responded by shouting, “Just because Jesus healed you that way doesn’t mean that He heals all people that same why. He healed me in a different way. You’re the one whose still blind!”

Thus, they got into an argument because they were both still blind to Who Jesus was, destroying a potentially wonderful relationship as they divided into two camps: the Mudites and the Anti-mudites.

Sadly, since then, Christians have been arguing, fighting, and splitting over issues not too different than that; blinded to the real Light, Love, and Truth of Jesus Christ. This is why we have the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, to discern and divide between darkness and light, true and false, right and wrong, good and evil – so we don’t get involved in Blind Arguments.
