This icon is based on the Old Testament passages found in the book of Exodus. It shows Moses in three separate postures: taking off his sandals, approaching the Burning Bush, and receiving the Ten Commandments from God. Moses is intrigued by this bush that burns, yet is not consumed by the fire. The burning bush reveals that God will become man without destroying humanity. It is through Mary that this is accomplished, as she accepts the Angel Gabriel’s proclamation. The union between God and His mother takes place so that all men can approach the Lord and be united to Him, not only in their souls, but also in the flesh. God is at once fearsome, incomprehensible and always unseen, yet offers Himself to humanity without destroying it.
