The 1950s

PARISH ORGANIZATIONS

AN IMPORTANT PART OF CHURCH LIFE

Many church clubs were important, including the Junior and Senior “R” Clubs, St. Michael’s Men’s Club and the Junior Women’s Club.  Sunday School began in 1952 with a large enrollment in both primary and junior divisions.  The Pre-Teen Club became a recreational outlet for youngsters between 8-13 years and met every Friday for crafts, sports, vocal and instrumental music and folk dancing.

A social hall was built by the parish with an auditorium and bowling alleys in 1951. This hall was utilized continually by our members but was also available to the public on a rental basis.

Many of Cleveland’s first rock-n-roll shows were showcased at St. Michael’s Hall. A young and then unknown Elvis Presley performed one of his first public concerts at  our Hall. His manager, surprised by the turnout of teenagers, asked the parish president if he could rent the hall for another concert the next evening, but was turned down!

Our annual church carnivals in the 1950’s were fun events as well as a good source of revenue.
