The chapter and verse numbers that are so familiar to us and which help us to navigate the Bible did not appear in the original manuscripts. In fact, dividing the books of the Bible into chapters did not occur until the thirteenth century. The further division by assigning verse numbers didn’t come about until the sixteenth century. So, for the bulk of Christendom’s history, chapter and verse citations were not used in the Bible at all.
