I don’t necessarily wish to categorize the Lord’s Prayer as being the “best” prayer because all prayer serves as a means of communication with God – including, of course, even silent heart-felt meditation. But to me the Lord’s Prayer is the perfect prayer because it is short, succinct, easily remembered, and moves us directly from praising God to the priorities of life. In addition, when the people asked Christ how they should pray, He taught them this prayer saying “Pray like this…” (Matt. 6:7-15; Luke 11:1-4), which makes this prayer divinely inspired.
However, the most important thing to remember about the Lord’s Prayer is that thoroughly depicts man’s relationship with God. For instance, when you say “Our Father,” you are experiencing a child/father relationship with God.
When you say, “Who art in heaven,” you are experiencing a transcendent relationship with God that moves us beyond the confines of time and space.
When you say, “Hallowed be Thy Name,” you are experiencing a worshiper / deity relationship with God.
When you say, “Thy kingdom come,” you are experiencing a subject / sovereign relationship with God.
When you say, “Thy will be done,” you are experiencing a servant / master relationship with God.
When you say “Give us this day our daily bread,” you are experiencing a beneficiary / benefactor relationship with God.
When you say, “Forgive us our trespasses,” you are experiencing a sinner / savior relationship with God.
When you say, “Lead us not into temptation,” you are experiencing a pilgrim / guide relationship with God.
When you say, “Deliver us from evil,” you, who are bound by the oppressive tyranny of the Devil, experience a relationship with God, Who delivers you from slavery to sin.
