What is a catechumen?

The term catechumen in Greek literally means, “one who is being taught.” Traditionally, a catechumen was someone who has not yet been initiated into the Mysteries or Sacraments of the Church. Therefore, a catechumen referred to anyone who was taking instruction so as to be Baptized and Christmated into the Christian Faith. In our modern era, a catechumen more often than not denotes a person who is preparing to join or convert the Orthodox Christian Faith.
