What is a “dendrite?”

Much like the stylites that dwelt atop a pillar, a dendrite is an ascetic who chooses to live in a tree. The term dendrite is derived from the Greek word for tree. Two of the most famous dendrites were St. David of Thessalonika, who lived high in the branches of an almond tree next to a church for over three years, and St. Tikhon of Kaluga, Russia who resided in an old, hollowed out oak tree.
