In the beginning, there is struggle and a lot of work for those who come near to God. But after that, there is indescribable joy. Don’t bother to be loquacious lest the mind is bewildered in the search for words. The tax-collector gained the Lord’s forgiveness with a single sentence, and a single word charged with faith was the salvation of the robber. Loquacity in prayer often fills the head with foolish fancies and provokes distractions. Brevity on the other hand - sometimes only one word is enough - in general favors recollection.

People of high spirit bear offence nobly and gladly, but only the holy and righteous can pass through praise without harm.

Go and have pity on all, for through pity, one finds freedom of speech before God.

O, you souls who wish to go on with so much safety and consolation, if you knew how pleasing to God is suffering, and how much it helps in acquiring other good things, you would never seek consolation in anything; but you would rather look upon it as a great happiness to bear the Cross of the Lord.
