He who does not consciously choose to distance himself from a cause for sin, will be drawn to sin, even against his will.

Truly, arrogance knows that it is guilty; therefore it places anger at the gate, to act as its sentry.

It is necessary most of all for one who is fasting to curb anger, to accustom himself to meekness and condescension, to have a contrite heart, to repulse impure thoughts and desires, to examine his conscience, to put his mind to the test and to verify what good has been done by us in this or any other week, and which deficiency we have corrected in ourselves in the present week. This is true fasting.

One who is capable of seeing himself is better than one who has been made worthy to see angels.

Silence of lips is better and more wonderful than any edifying conversation. Strive to acquire humility and submissiveness. Never insist that anything should be according to your will, for this gives birth to anger. Do not judge or humiliate anyone, for this gives birth to anger. Self-knowledge is a true idea of one's spiritual growth, and an unbroken remembrance of one's slightest sins.

Let us not put off from day to day, without observing how sin is injuring us.

Through anger the brightness of the Holy Spirit is shut out from the soul.

All sin is due to sensual pleasure, all forgiveness to hardship and distress.

God seeks nothing else from us men except that we do not sin; this alone. But this is not a work of law; it is rather a careful guarding of the image and dignity from above. In these things, affirmed in our nature and bearing the radiant garment of the Spirit, we shall abide in God and He in us. We shall be called good, and sons of God by adoption, marked in the light of our knowledge of God.

How then shall we escape the disasters that anger brings? By training the force of our feelings not to rush ahead of the power of reason.
