On that day God will not judge us about psalmody, nor for the neglect of prayer, but because by abandoning them, we have opened our door to the demons.

To deny oneself means to give up one's bad habits, to root out of the heart all that ties us to the world; not to cherish bad desires and thoughts; to quench and suppress bad thoughts; to avoid occasions of sin; not to do or desire anything from self-love but to do everything out of love for God. To deny oneself means, according to the Apostle Paul, to be dead to sin and the world, but alive to God.

There is yet another reason that may cause our prayer to go unanswered: namely, that though we pray we yet continue in sin.

A sign of deliverance from our falls is the continual reckoning of ourselves as debtors.

How much joy, how much peace of soul would a man not have wherever he went... if he was one who habitually accused himself.

The martyrs will show their torments, the ascetics their good works; but what will I have to show but my apathy and my incessant indulgence?

He who believes in Christ is not judged, for he judges himself, and sets his feet aright to follow the light that goes before him. If anyone wants to drive out the demons, he must first subdue the passions, for he will banish the demon of the passion which he has mastered. For example, the devil accompanies anger; so it you control your anger, the devil of anger will be banished. And so it is with each of the passions.

He alone knows himself in the best way who thinks of himself as being nothing.

Be concentrated without self-display, withdrawn into your heart. For the demons fear concentration as thieves fear dogs.

Wherever there is obedience, humility, and struggling, the demons can never take a person captive.
