Repentance not only cleanses a person from sins, but also sharpens his sight so that he sees himself more clearly.

Repentance is the renewal of baptism. Repentance is a contract with God for a second life. A penitent is a buyer of humility. Repentance is constant distrust of bodily comfort. Repentance is self-condemning reflection, and carefree self-care. Repentance is the daughter of hope and the renunciation of despair.

Every man who has committed sin, has stopped up the senses of his soul with the mud of pleasure.

A humble and spiritually active man, when he reads the Holy Scripture, will refer everything to himself and not to another.

Control your stomach, sleep, anger, and tongue, and you will not 'dash your foot against a stone.'

For never is a man forced into sin by another’s fault, unless he have, stowed away in his heart, matter for evil deeds. Lack of self-control is actually an evil both ancient and modern, though it did not precede its antidote, fasting. By means of our Forefathers' self-indulgence in paradise and their contempt for the fast already in existance there, death entered the world. Sin reigned and brought in the condemnation of our nature from Adam until Christ.

If you lay down rules for yourself, do not disobey yourself; for he who cheats himself is self-deluded.

St. Paul says: 'The person engaged in spiritual warfare exercises self control in all things' (I Cor. 9:25). Aware of all that is said in divine Scripture, let us lead our life with self-control, especially in regard to food.

A man who falls into sin is different from the way he was created. He is different, because he changes by his own actions the way he was meant to be. Man renounces himself when he becomes a different person through repentance. He leaves a corrupted man, which he had become through sin, and becomes such as he once was created, through mercy.

Reading the scriptures is a great safeguard against sin.

Sin disfigures a man, while grace brings beauty.

Holy Scripture is presented to the mind’s eye like a mirror in which the appearance of our inner being can be seen.

Self-control and strenuous effort curb desire; stillness and intense longing for God wither it.
