Why does the Gospel of John refer to miracles as “signs?”

John’s gospel specifically uses the Greek word semeion (sign) instead of dynamis (miracle) to describe events such as water being turned into wine (2:1-11), the healing the official’s son (5:46-54), etc. I think John purposely did this to convey that these acts were not simply amazing events (“miraculous”), but that they disclosed something important about Jesus that had previously been hidden: that He was in fact the Messiah – the Son of God foretold by the Prophets Who radiated the power and presence of His Father.
