John’s gospel specifically uses the Greek word semeion (sign) instead of dynamis (miracle) to describe events such as water being turned into wine (2:1-11), the healing the official’s son (5:46-54), etc. I think John purposely did this to convey that these acts were not simply amazing events (“miraculous”), but that they disclosed something important about Jesus that had previously been hidden: that He was in fact the Messiah – the Son of God foretold by the Prophets Who radiated the power and presence of His Father.
