Presbyter, meaning “elder” in Greek, is the derivative for the English word priest and “Proto” in Greek means first. Protopresbyter, therefore, literally translates as “first priest” or “first among priests,” and is often an honorary distinction accorded to those servitors who hold high ranking positions in the Church.
