Christian-based meetings have a longstanding history in the life of the Church. In the Book of Acts, chapter 2, the apostles gathered to elect someone to replace Judas, who hanged himself. In chapter 15, they convened in Jerusalem to discuss whether Gentile converts to Christianity needed to adhere to Mosaic Law.
The Ecumenical Councils are by far the most well-known and documented historically, setting the standard for Catholicity and Conciliarity, which filters down from the Church at large, to National, Diocesan, and local levels.
Such meetings offered a platform for dialogue to discern theological doctrine, refute heresies, discuss critical issues, resolve disputes, address moral conflicts, formulate standards of ecclesiastical governance, and establish liturgical structure, traditions, and norms. They helped foster unity, bolster spirituality, and preserve the essence of Orthodoxy via the Grace and Guidance of the Holy Spirit. They also allowed Churches to maintain their properties, managing affairs and finances with due diligence.
This is why we have monthly Council Meetings and Annual Meetings for the parish at large: to discuss, manage, and promote the Kingdom of God while using the resources entrusted to our care by God as Good Stewards and Apostles of Christ.
Our Annual Parish Meeting will take place on Sunday, February 15 following Divine Liturgy. Make sure you attend both so that you might HEAR the Word of God, and then HEED and do it.
