Prayer demands that the mind should be pure of all thought and should admit nothing not belonging to prayer, even if it were good in itself. As if inspired by God the mind should withdraw from all things and hold its converse with Him alone.

Do not pray that things may be according to your desires, for they are not always in keeping with the will of God. Better pray as you were taught, saying: ‘Thy will be done’ on me (Matt. vi 10). And ask thus about all things, for He always desires what is good and profitable for your soul, whereas you do not always seek it.

Be fond of working with your hands, but still more of the memory of prayer; because the first does not always bring us the fruit of that occupation, while the second does so unceasingly. Do not stop praying until you have paid your due of prayer in full, and do not listen to the thought that it is time to sit down to work. Equally, when you sit at work, do not be too concerned in it, lest you agitate the heart by your haste and make it worthless for prayer.

Whatever you have endured out of love of wisdom will bear fruit for you at the time of prayer.

When the blessed Eulogius saw an angel distributing gifts to the monks who toiled at all-night vigils, to one he gave a gold piece with the image of Our Lord Jesus Christ, to another a silver piece with a cross, to another a copper piece, to another a bronze piece, and to another nothing. The others who had remained in the church, left the church empty-handed. It was revealed to him that the ones who had obtained the gifts are those who toil at vigils and are diligent in prayers, supplications, psalms, chants, and readings. Those who received nothing or who left the church empty-handed are those who are heedless of their salvation, are enslaved to vainglory and the clamors of life, and stand feebly and lazily at vigils and whisper and jest.

Prayer is a branch (of a tree) of meekness, and freedom from anger. Prayer is an expression of joy and thankfulness. Prayer is a remedy against sorrow and depression.

If you desire salvation, do everything that leads you to it.

Do not be always wanting everything to turn out as you think it should, but rather as God pleases; then you will be undisturbed and thankful in your prayer.

He who endures distress, will be granted joys; and he who bears with unpleasant things, will not be deprived of the pleasant.

Everything you do in revenge against a brother who has harmed you will come back to your mind at the time of prayer.

When you shed floods of tears during prayer, do not exalt yourself for this, as though you were above many others. It is that your prayer has received help from above, so that, having zealously confessed your sins, you may incline the almighty to mercy by your tears.

Prayer is a remedy against grief and depression.

Chastise your soul with the thought of death, and through remembrance of Jesus Christ concentrate your scattered intellect.

If you want to pray properly, do not let yourself be upset or you will run in vain.

Just as the most bitter medicine drives out poisonous things, so prayer joined to fasting drives evil thoughts away.

Prayer attunes us for converse with God and, through long practice, leads us to friendship with Him.

Let the debtor who owed ten thousand talents teach you that if you do not forgive your debtor you will not be forgiven...

Prayer is the seed of gentleness and the absence of anger.
