A brother who shared a lodging with other brothers asked Abba Bessarion, 'What should I do?' The old man replied, 'Keep silence and do not compare yourself with others.'

All sin is due to sensual pleasure, all forgiveness to hardship and distress.

'Grace always precedes temptations.' He knew that grace always precedes temptations as a forewarning preparation. As soon as you perceive grace, gird yourself and say: 'Here comes the call to battle! Grace is divided into three stages: purifying, enlightening, and perfecting. So also are deeds: natural, supernatural, contranatural. According to these three stages on ascends and descends. The great gifts one receives are also three: contemplation, love, dispassion.

The person who listens to Christ fills himself with light; and if he imitates Christ, he reclaims himself.

Do thou, [St. Ephraim the Syrian] that art standing at the Divine altar, and art ministering with angels to the life-giving and most Holy Trinity, bear us all in remembrance, petitioning for us the remission of sins, and the fruition of an everlasting kingdom.

Near as the body is to the soul, the Lord is nearer, to come and open the locked doors of the heart, and to bestow on us the riches of heaven.

Fear of the Lord conquers desire, and distress that accords with God's will repulses sensual pleasure.

Concern for one's soul means hardship and humility, for through these God forgives us all our sins.

The head of every good striving and the pinnacle of all corrections is to persevere in prayer, by which we may ever obtain, through entreaty of God, all the other virtues as well. By prayer those who are worthy partake of the sanctity of God and spiritual activity and the union of the mind with the Lord in unutterable love. He who constantly forces himself to endure in prayer is roused by spiritual love to Divine fervor and flaming desire towards God, and he receives, according to his measure, the grace of spiritual, sanctifying perfection.

It is an insult to the intelligence to be subject to what lacks intelligence and to concern itself with shameful desires.

The intellect becomes a stranger to the things of this world when its attachment to the senses has been completely sundered.

What good is it to keep meat out of your mouth if you bite your brother with wickedness? What good does it serve you to observe a strict frugality at home if you unjustly steal from the poor? What kind of piety teaches you to drink water while you hatch plots and drink the blood of a man you have shamefully cheated? Judas, after all, fasted along with the eleven, but failed to master his greed; his salvation gained nothing by fasting. And the devil does not eat, for he is an incorporeal spirit, but he fell from on high through wickedness. Likewise, none of the demons can be accused of gorging themselves, of excessive drinking or getting drunk, for their nature makes feeding unnecessary; nevertheless, night and day, they roam through the air, agents and servants of evil, eager for our loss. They ooze with bitterness and jealousy—things it is well to avoid—at the idea that humans may enter into an intimacy with God, since they have fallen from the supremely worthy dwelling.

If you are not willing to repent through freely choosing to suffer, unsought sufferings will providentially be imposed on you.

Long-suffering and readiness to forgive curb anger; love and compassion wither it.

Love and self-control purify the soul.

Spiritual reading and prayer purify the intellect, while love and self-control purify the soul's passionate aspect.

He who fears God will pay careful attention to his soul and will free himself from communion with evil.

Blessed stillness gives birth to blessed children: self-control, love and pure prayer.
