When tested by some trial you should try to find out not why or through whom it came, but only how to endure it gratefully, without distress or rancor.
He who reveres the Lord does what is commanded, and if he commits some sin or disobeys Him, endures whatever he has to suffer for this as being his desert.

But if you prevail over them through prayer and maintain your hope, you will receive God's grace, and this will deliver you...
Remember, O my soul, the terrible and frightful wonder: that your Creator for your sake became Man, and deigned to suffer for the sake of your salvation. His angels tremble, the Cherubim are terrified, the Seraphim are in fear, and all the heavenly powers ceaselessly give praise; and you, unfortunate soul, remain in laziness. The grace of the Spirit is one and unchanging, but energizes in each one of us as He wills.
