The Resurrection

Although the actual moment of the Resurrection cannot be depicted in icono-graphic form, there are nonetheless several ways of representing Christ’s Resurrection through iconography.

This particular icon, also known as “The Descent into Hell” is the most common. In the foreground is Hades, which has been conquered. Scattered about are keys, broken locks, and chains. Christ is shown in radiant splendor as he raises Adam from his grave with his right hand and Eve with his left. Adam and Eve are chosen because, as the first human beings, they symbolize the entire human race, which Christ has released from eternal death. His feet are apart, indicating vigorous movement; and are shown above the “crossed” tomb lids, which helps to symbolize His triumph over death. Christ is flanked by various other figures including Saint John the Baptist, the Righteous Abel and the Prophet-kings David and Solomon.
