“Why do we greet the bishop with bread and salt?”

St. Paul instructs us to “welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God” (Romans 15:7). Therefore, hospitality is a true hallmark of the Christian Faith and providing food and shelter to others is a means by which we glorify God. The Slavic custom of greeting guests with bread and salt – symbolic of ones willingness to offer all they have – is a faith-filled expression of this very principle.
