We live in a world that constantly tries to fill us with things that can never truly satisfy. Riches, success, power, possessions, and achievements all offer temporary fulfillment, however, as we come to find, these things often leave us feeling all-the-more empty, just like the rich, but unsatisfied young man in today’s gospel lesson.
Jesus, on the other hand, offers us something the world cannot, He offers us Himself, not a source of satisfaction, but the source and “fulness” of satisfaction. He is the Bread of Life who nourishes and satisfies our deepest hunger; the Living Water who quenches our spiritual thirst for wisdom, truth, and knowledge of God; He is the well-spring of Life, who offers us hope and a better way of living. Our Lord is the Light of the world who shines brightly to exposes all manner of evil and darkness, while also eradiating our sins; He is the Good News who provides joy, comfort, and solace in times of distress; He is our Peace, who offers us a calm haven, rest, and support in times of suffering. He is the Truth which cuts like a mighty sword to divide good from evil, truth from falsehood, love from hate. He is the True Way that leads us to the Kingdom of God, as well as the Door by which we enter; He is the True Vine upon which we grow, mature, and bear spiritual fruits – not only because we are connected to Him, but more importantly, “part of Him.” He is the Good Shepard who protects us, cares for us, understands us, and loves us.
Nothing in this world can bring us satisfaction, which is why Christ came and overcame the world!
