Swim Against the Current

From the moment of our birth we are plunged into a world which simultaneously expects us to stand out, yet fit in; encourages us to be an individual, but to behave according to the norm; desires us to be creative, but within the parameters of approval; demands that we bring about societal change, so long as we do not upset or offend those around us. Unfortunately, such prevailing currents subtly seduce us towards the lowest common denominator, never encouraging us to rise above or strive to achieve greater heights. This should not be so. The life of a Christian must always go against the flow. St. Philaret of Moscow wrote that, “A fish that is alive swims against the flow of water; one that is dead floats down with the water. A true Christian goes against the current of our sinful age; a false one is swept away by its swiftness.” The Myrrhbearers are true examples of what it means to go against the flow, for they pleaded for mercy from Pilate while all the rest shouted for Jesus’ crucifixion. They stood by the Cross, while everyone else scattered. They boldly asked for Christ’s Body, anointed, and buried it while His closest friends all hid in fear. And most importantly, they proved their love, loyalty, and devotion for Christ by caring for Him even though He was dead and had nothing else to give.
